38-yr-old Irish woman remains in critical condition after shooting in Australia

A 38-year-old County Mayo woman remains in a critical condition in an Australian hospital after being shot with gunshot wounds earlier this week, reports RTE.

Police said she was shot in the stomach at a home in the northern town of Milner in Darwin.

Relatives are preparing to travel to Australia to be at her bedside.

Ms Gibbons is said to have emigrated about seven years ago, reports RTE.

Following the incident, paramedics at the scene stabilized her condition and she was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for emergency surgery.

Her condition is stable and she is said to be conscious.

A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a firearm was seized.

Detectives believe both parties knew each other.

The shooting happened in the suburb of Milner at around 6.30pm local time (10am Irish time) on Tuesday.

Co Mayo Councillor Martin McLoughlin said: “The community here are shocked to learn of this terrible incident and we want to wish this young mother all the best and hope that she makes a full recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as she remains in a critical condition,” reports RTE.
