40 people rescued by the Coastguard and RNLI from 40ft boat after it ran into distress in County Galway

A total of 40 people have been rescued by the RNLI and the Coastguard from a 40ft long boat stranded in County Galway.

A request has been made to the Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat to assist passengers aboard the vessel, which ran into distress on a rocky shoreline off Bonaventure Point in Lough Derg reports RTE. The alarm was raised by the Coast Guard of Valentia.

Due to the large number of people on board, a second Coastguard vessel from Killaloe also assisted.  After disembarking from the boat, the RNLI volunteers were told all aboard were safe and were wearing life jackets.

The decision was made to tow the boat out of the shoal and the six passengers were taken to the Coast Guard Vessel Kilaloa, reports RTE.  Once in safe waters, the lifeboat towed the casualty to the vessel with release lines.  The Coastguard returned to the scene and Lough Derg in the RNLI lifeboat and the yacht was towed to the safety of Castle Harbor in the Galway city of Portumna.

Peter Kennedy, Deputy Launch Authority at Lough Derg RNLI, commended both Lough Derg RNLI and the Killaloe Coastguard for their “swift response and excellent teamwork in effecting a challenging rescue in testing conditions”, reports RTE.
