486km wall of heavy rain to encompass the entire country as Met Eireann issues stark alert

Ireland’s sunny streak is about to be washed out, as Met Éireann has issued a strong warning ahead of an extensive wave of rain set to sweep across the entire country. After enjoying over a week of uninterrupted sunshine and temperatures surpassing 20°C, the recent ‘mini-heatwave’ is set to be replaced by a massive 486-kilometre band of rainfall, reports The Mirror.

The national weather service has raised concerns for the days ahead, with Sunday marking the clear shift to more dismal weather. Forecast maps show a threatening swathe of rain spanning from Donegal to Cork, covering all 32 counties, bringing with it cooler air, hail, and even “the odd rumble of thunder.”

This past week saw people across Ireland flock to beaches, parks, and beer gardens to soak up the rare sunshine, but forecasters now caution that this spell of good weather is about to be completely overturned, reports The Mirror.

Saturday may still offer some sunny intervals, but the weather will feel noticeably cooler, with showers expected in eastern and southern areas before spreading westward as the day progresses.

Come Sunday, the change will be impossible to ignore. A mix of sunshine and rain showers is expected, with the possibility of heavy downpours and hail. Met Éireann said: “Scattered showers in the west will spread eastwards over the country on Sunday morning, with sunny breaks in between. The day will continue with alternating sunshine and showers. Some of these may become heavy, with hail and the chance of isolated thunder. Temperatures will drop significantly, with highs of just 9°C to 12°C in moderate southwest to west winds, occasionally fresh and gusty, particularly along western and southern coasts,” reports The Mirror.

Monday brings an even more dramatic turn, with a 486-kilometre-long band of rain rolling in from the Atlantic, engulfing the entire island in what’s being dubbed a ‘wall of rain.’ According to WXCharts, by 3pm on Monday, April 14, no region in Ireland will be spared from the downpour.

Met Éireann stated: “Monday will begin dry and sunny for many, but scattered showers will develop near the Atlantic coast and spread more widely by afternoon. Some of these may again be heavy with hail and possibly thunder. Temperatures will range from 9°C to 12°C with mostly moderate, sometimes fresh and gusty southwest winds, easing later,” reports The Mirror.

Looking ahead, next week’s forecast remains unsettled and wet. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to bring continued heavy showers with the potential for thunder, and daytime temperatures will hover between 9°C and 13°C. Nighttime lows may be cold enough to produce frost in certain areas.

By the end of the week, the weather is expected to become windier as low pressure dominates heading into the Easter bank holiday weekend, reports The Mirror.
