A 6-yr-old boy and his mother were shot alongside three others in New York on Monday as the city’s recent crime wave continues.
The victims are understood to have been celebrating J’Ouvert, a traditional street party that marks the start of the Carnival in Carribean cultures. Two gunmen opened fire on a small crowd outside a house, hitting the boy in his leg and sending all five victims into hospital. Fortunately no fatalities have been recorded and NYPD confirmed they have arrested two suspects.
President Donald Trump tweeted about the ‘bad night’ in Brooklyn, and also mentioned the violence in Rochester, New York as well as Portland, Oregon. New York City has seen a surge in violence and crime during the Covid-19 pandemic. Shootings in August 2020 were up by 166% compared to the same month last year.
