A powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Nepal earlier today, killing more than 1,000 people across four countries.

The seismic waves rocked houses to the the ground, destroyed centuries-old structures, and triggered avalanches on Mount Everest.

This has been the worst quake to strike the region in over eight decades. 876 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal alone, according to local sources.

The quake hit just before midday local time, spreading outwards in all directions from its epicenter.

A 6.6 magnitude aftershock hit about 60 minutes later, hampering rescue efforts and causing further destruction.

Less intense aftershocks kept rippling through the region for hours. The airport in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu was closed following the event.

As it happened, a group of nine Co. Wexford hillwalkers had just arrived in Kathmandu before the quake struck. All are reported safe.

A helpline has been setup by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for anyone who might be concerned about Irish citizens currently present in Nepal or any other country affected by the disaster.

The number is 01 4780822.
