A new earthquake has hit central Italy earlier this morning.

The quake hit the region around the town of Norcia, near Perugia, in the Umbria region (about 160km north of Rome) at 7.40am, local time.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre measured the activity at a magnitude of 6.6, and a depth of 10km. Its epicenter was pinpointed 3km north of the town of Norcia.

Some buildings that had been badly damaged by previous quakes, finally collapsed.

Over a thousand residents in the locality had fled their homes after tremors hit the area four days ago, and many had been sleeping in their cars when the new quake hit today.

It is unclear whether or not any fatalities have occurred.
