Dozens of homes had to be evacuated in the town of Mountmellick, Co. Laois, after a local river burst its banks in heavy rain and flooded nearby housing estates.
The town is essentially cut off at the moment, as all access roads are impassable.
A rainfall warning expired at 9pm this evening. Cold temperatures are expected to hamper rescue efforts overnight.
