Legal recognition for transgender people in Ireland after the Gender Recognition Bill was passed

The Gender Recognition Bill was passed today by The Oireachtas and will now be signed into law by the President over the next seven days.

The bill enables transgender people over the age of 18 to change their birth certificate to their preferred gender and receive full legal recognition.

It also allows them to have their gender recognised when entering marriage or civil partnership.

Minister of State, Kevin Humphrey’s said “It’s another milestone for equality in Irish society”.
