A number of pilots report youngsters shining laser pens directly at cockpits

A number of pilots have reported incidents of youngsters shining laser pens directly at their cockpit this week, the PSNI has revealed.

Thankfully no one was injured as a result of the reckless behaviour but police in the North have said the incident was “extremely dangerous”.

According to reports, the most recent incident took place last night as an aircraft was in the Jordanstown area at around 10:55pm.

“Not only is it an offence under the Air Navigation Order to endanger aircraft but it is highly irresponsible and dangerous,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

Lasers can cause temporary blindness, so shining the pens could result in a catastrophe and possibly lead to significant loss of life.

Anyone engaged in the activity has been warned they could face charges of being in possession of a dangerous weapon.
