The Department of Health have released the latest figures for the total abortions carried out in Ireland in 2020.

A total of 6,577 women had an abortion in Ireland in 2020, according to a report presented today by the Department of Health reports the Iona Institute.

This brings the total abortions following REPEAL (2019 and 2020) to 13,243 abortions.

The abortion rate, calculated per 1,000 women aged 15-44, was 6.6 in 2020 and 6.9 in 2019 reports the Iona Institute. Between January and April 2020, 2,554 abortions were performed in Ireland. This is a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2019 (2,161).
