Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn calls for household gatherings such as family events to stop

The acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has called on family gathering events to stop over the coming weeks in order to stem the spread of Covid-19.

Speaking before the National Public Health Emergency Team briefing, Dr Glynn said that the NPHET team has become concerned with the rise in cases associated with private house gatherings.

Dr Glynn said that almost half of all cases reported in Dublin have come from private house gatherings.

The acting Chief Medical Officer said that would advise that all gatherings such as christening and communion parties to stop over the coming weeks.

He also called for gatherings such as dinner parties to stop as people who seem well may not be healthy and those hosting the party wouldn’t know for sure if they themselves are well.

Dr Glynn said that NPHET would be meeting with the government later today to discuss measures going forward, but reiterated that there will be a strong message put out on reducing the number of contacts.
