A white van drove into a crowd near Berlin’s Tiergarten park during the city’s Christopher Street Day (Pride) celebrations on Saturday evening, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others, some with life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time in the park adjacent to the parade route and festivities near the Brandenburg Gate. The vehicle struck pedestrians before colliding with a tree. Police immediately launched a major operation, called off the ongoing Pride events and a planned concert, and urged people to leave the area as emergency services treated victims.

Authorities later identified the main suspect as 21-year-old Abdul B. (also referred to as Abdul Ballout), a German national of Lebanese origin known to police and linked to Islamist circles in Berlin. He remains at large, prompting an intensive manhunt; the van was recovered at the scene. Officials have described the attack as a suspected act of Islamic extremist terrorism, though investigations into exact motives and any possible accomplices continue. Some early witness accounts mentioned possible stab wounds in addition to the vehicle impact.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the attack on the city’s free and cosmopolitan society following a peaceful parade that drew hundreds of thousands. German leaders, including the chancellor and interior minister, also denounced the violence. Police continue to seek witnesses and evidence as the search intensifies.
