The leader of the Sinn Féin Gerry Adams has claimed that he was not a member of the IRA. Mr Adams made his comments whilst he was giving an interview to American programme 60 minutes on CBS, Mr Adams also claimed that incidents such as the murder of Jean McConville happen in wars.

The interview is due to be broadcast in the United States on Sunday, Mr Adams also said that he had never pulled a trigger, ordered a murder or set off a bomb during the interview.
The Sinn Fein leader told the reporter: “I don’t disassociate myself from the IRA. I think the IRA was a legitimate response to what was happening here.”

The abduction and murder of Ms McConville a widowed mother of 10 by the IRA 1972 has never been officially solved although Mr Adams was questioned about her killing last May.

When the reporter Scott Pelley asked Mr Adams:  “How do you orphan 10 children?”, Mr Adams replied by saying: “that is what happens in wars…That’s what American soldiers do, British soldiers do, Irish Republican soldiers do, that’s what happens in every single conflict.”
