‘Affordable’ housing far too expensive, claims McDonald, but many believe that Sinn Fein would be even worse

Sinn Féin’s leader has criticized the high prices of new “affordable” housing, saying they are unaffordable for the majority of buyers, reports Breaking News.

This statement comes as 1,000 individuals have applied for only 99 affordable homes at the former site of O’Devaney Gardens in Dublin.

The properties include both apartments and houses, with prices ranging from €248,000 to €473,000, as reported by the Irish Times, reports Breaking News.

Under the affordable purchase scheme, buyers can receive a discount of up to 27 percent, based on their income levels.

Mary Lou McDonald argued that the Government is “out of touch” and failing to meet its housing goals, reports Breaking News.

Ms. McDonald stated: “O’Devaney Gardens, the land in question… the community in question is an established community over many, many years,” reports Breaking News.

“The land was public land, the land was essentially gifted to a private developer. We’ve had all sorts of promises around social housing, affordable housing, that has been very, very scant,” she continued, reports Breaking News.

She further emphasized: “The fact that the Government would regard houses coming in at almost €500,000 as being in any way affordable is just ludicrous, I think it demonstrates just how out of touch, and how uncaring, and how untrustworthy this government is,” reports Breaking News.
