Air Canada flight forced to execute go-around maneuver, after mistakenly lining up to land on crowded taxiway

An Air Canada flight found itself seconds from disaster, after mistakenly lining up to land on a taxiway occupied by four jets, rather than the runway.

The incident happened at San Francisco Airport last Friday.

Air Traffic Controllers at the airport cleared an Air Canada Airbus A320 to land on Runway 28R (right), but for reasons yet unclear, the jet lined up to land on Taxiway C instead, which runs parallel to the runway, and was being used by four other passenger jets at the time.

As the drama unfolded in the skies, radio chatter on the ground reflected the severity of the situation, with several crew members on the taxiing planes expressing their concern at the incoming Airbus.

Controllers soon alerted the aircraft, and the Airbus executed a go-around procedure. It landed on the runway shortly afterwards.

Had the Airbus crew continued on its original course, it could have led to the greatest aviation disaster in history.

Airport authorities and the airlines involved are conducting an investigation.
