Air France Flight AF66 was forced to divert to Canada after engine 4 on the starboard wing experienced a failure in mid-flight.
The aircraft, an Airbus A380 model, was en route from Paris CDG to Los Angeles LAX when it declared an emergency.
The crew were able to conduct a visual examination and determined that the engine’s cowling inlet had blown out.
The captain diverted the flight to Goose Bay, a Canadian Air Force base sited in the Newfoundland-Labrador area, where it landed without further incident at 1.40pm local time
The aircraft was fitted with turbofan GP7000 jet engines, manufactured by Engine Alliance. This is one of two powerplant options available for the Airbus A380, along with the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine.
