Flights landing at Heathrow and Gatwick in the UK may experience significant delays over the coming weeks, as air traffic controllers switch from the traditional ‘paper’ system to a brand new digital environment.
Flight capacity at Heathrow will be reduced by as much as 20% over the following two months, as controllers work with the new system in a live setting.
The digital move is part of a £700m programme to upgrade air traffic management systems across the UK, to better cope with rising demand.
