AirAsia Flight QZ 8501 has gone missing.

The aircraft was en route from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore when the pilots contacted traffic control to request a change in their planned route because of adverse weather condition along their flight path. Radar contact with the jet was lost shortly afterwards.

It is unclear at this point when exactly the flight went missing. AirAsia said contact was lost at 7:24 a.m. Sunday (7:24 p.m. Saturday ET), but Indonesian authorities stated that it happened earlier, at 6:17 a.m.

The missing Airbus A320-200 was carrying 162 people, including seven crew members, seventeen children and one infant.

As word of the missing plane spread, the airline changed the color of its logo from red to gray.

AirAsia is a very popular budget, Malaysia-based airline. It flies to about 100 destinations.
