Alan Kelly’s bid for more power: ‘New Labour leader will be chosen in the best interest of the party’

Former Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly is vying for power in the Labour camp, after leaving his beloved Irish Water legacy behind for others to manage.

The shattered remnants of the Labour party are currently headless, after Joan Burton’s stepping down in recent days.

So far, Mr. Kelly is the only one to have pubicly announced his intentions to take control, though it is believed that former ministers Brendan Howlin and Jan O’Sullivan may also be in the running.

Mr. Kelly, who has also just set up a quango in the lines of Irish Water, has said: “Everything that is put forward by my colleagues I’ll consider.
“I believe that everyone else in the parliamentary party will consider as well.

“I also believe that everyone in the parliamentary party will consider what I say too.

“We are a membership driven organisation, we are the most democratic party in the country and I believe that will certainly be at the fore of everyone’s minds.

“We are all friends by the way so it is not like a normal contest in that sense. But everyone is driven to ensure that the outcome is the best for the Labour party in the years to come.”
