Alaska is warmer than Ireland right now as temperatures surpass 30C

It is pretty much unheard of but the US state of Alaska is currently experiencing a heatwave with temperatures topping 30C.

In what has been a five week blast for the state, temperatures in its main city Anchorage surpassed 32C on July 4th.

The surge in heat for the state which is synonymous with snow freezing cold temperatures comes as a heat dome which traps warm ocean air has moved across the state in recent weeks.

Although the state normally experiences temperatures in the low 20s at this time of the year, the latest bout of hot weather has seen the state record its highest ever temperature since 1969 with a high of 32.2C recorded on Thursday.

According to The US National Weather Service, the unusual warm weather is set to continue in the state as the heat dome is expected to move further northwards next week.

Forecasters say temperatures could potentially surpass the 32.2C recorded on Thursday.
