An Algerian man with Irish citizenship convicted of terror offenses last July has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the United States.

RTE reports that Ali Charaf Damache (51) was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to terror charges earlier this year.

Damache, who went by the pseudonym “TheBlackFlag”, a reference to the black flag of the Islamic State, had plotted the murder of a Swedish cartoonist who mocked the Prophet Mohammed and was arrested in Barcelona in December 2015.

The Algerian man also headed a Jihadi cell that planned to carry out atrocities in Europe and Asia.

In 2015 the Irish High court refused to extradite Damache to the US, but his extradition eventually went ahead in 2017.
