According to reports this morning the Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has all but sealed victory in the race become the new Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach.
Mr Varadkar who has been clear favourite over the past fortnight has seemingly managed to hold off a strong comeback from his rival Simon Coveney.
Although Mr Coveney is the public’s favourite to take the position vacated by Enda Kenny, it seems senior figures within the Fine Gael party disagree with many agreeing that the former Health Minister is the right man for the job.
The result of the contest which has been a highly contested campaign is due to be announced at 6pm this evening, and it seems the Housing Minister Coveney has been unable to persuade senior figures within the party to change their minds even though he has the vast majority of support from regular party members.
