Not really free – Planned free healthcare scheme for everyone could cost the Irish taxpayer €2.3bn per year

The Government announced plans earlier this week that would see the healthcare system radically overhauled within the next ten years.

Under the new proposals outlined by the Minister for Health Simon Harris every person in Ireland will be entitled to free GP visits along with reduced hospital waiting times.

However according to new report published in the Irish Daily Mail today the ideal proposal which would see private care being taken out of public hospitals will come at a cost.

The paper claims the new scheme expected to be in place by 2027 could end up costing the Irish taxpayer €2.3bn a year rather than a one off cost.
