The 2020 General Election has surprised media pundits with the unprecedented surge in support for Sinn Fein but also coming as something of a surprise political commentators is the fact that all 15 TDs who voted against abortion legalisation have been re-elected.
Despite the fact that the referendum to repeal the constitution’s eight amendment passed with a large majority some key figures in the Repeal campaign, including People Before Profit’s Ruth Coppinger and former Children’s Minister Catherine Zappone have lost their seats.
Meanwhile, all TDs who remained resolute following the referendum and continued to oppose abortion legalisation including Fianna Fail’s Éamon Ó Cuív, the grandson of the titan of 20th century Irish politics, Éamon de Valera, and former Sinn Fein TD Peadar Tóibín.
Deputy Tóibín left Sinn Fein after the party whip refused to let parliamentary members vote according to their conscience and founded the pro-life, republican Aontú party in January 2019.
