The Irish passport office will have a lot more applications to deal with in the coming months ahead, after the Irish Ambassador to Britain Dan Mulhall revealed that applications from British citizens has risen by 50%.
Mr Mulhall who speaking at a question-and-answer session at a meeting of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly in Cardiff, revealed that on figures suggest there would be a 50% increase between 2015 and 2016.
Mr Mulhall also said that applications rose by 10% in the early months of the year, and increased by 70-80% during the months after the referendum.
Mr Mulhall told the conference that Brexit had created a “degree of uncertainty” about the future trading relations between the EU and UK. He further stated: “We hope that the UK will remain part of the single market and the customs union, but the outlook for this is still unclear.”
“If the UK is outside the single market, then a new trading relationship will need to be negotiated and this is likely to be a complex and lengthy process.”
