Almost 1 in 3 Irish people say they experienced sexual violence as a child, new survey claims

One study found that one in three adults experienced some form of sexual violence as a child, reports RTE.

The study was conducted by the Central Statistical Office and is based on 4.5 thousand. initial responses, including 500 people who had not told anyone about their experiences until the time of the Central Statistical Office survey.

It was carried out as part of a year-long series of reports to highlight the level of and attitudes towards sexual violence in Ireland.

It focused on two specific areas, sexual assault, including contact sexual violence, and non-contact sexual violence, including exposure to pornographic material.

The report found that 7% of women and 2% of men were victims of sexual violence in childhood.

In turn, 25% of women and 16% of men experienced non-contact sexual violence in childhood.

Nine out of ten contact and non-contact sexual assaults were found to be committed by a male, most of whom were minors, and one in three sexual assaults occurred in or out of a public place, reports RTE.

Today’s report follows a comprehensive report on the overall prevalence of sexual violence in April and a second report on sexual violence among adults, which was released in May.

Three more reports on experiences of sexual violence, sexual harassment and stalking, and attitudes towards sexual violence will be published in the fall.
