After a messy election campaign, Fianna Fail finally has a presidential candidate with Jim Gavin taking on the role.
While the ballot is secret, it has emerged that Gavin won 41 votes with the other candidate taking 29. This result is being seen as a disaster for Martin and a sign that a large section of the Party refused to vote for the candidate that he had personally endorsed.
The result comes at a terrible time for Martin, who betrayed former leader Bertie Ahern last week by refusing to endorse him. For many on social media this was the last straw for Martin’s leadership, and he is now seen as someone who is unable to unite the Fianna Fail Party.
Martin is heading into a worrying presidential campaign, with many on social media indicating that he will have to resign if Jim Gavin doesn’t win.
