Almost 30 per cent of young people in Ireland aged between 18 and 29 believe the Holocaust is either a “myth” or that it did occur but its scale has been “greatly exaggerated”, a new survey has found, reports Breaking News.
The research was commissioned by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and was carried out online among 1,000 participants aged 18 and over drawn from a panel of Irish residents who had agreed to take part in surveys, reports Breaking News.
The findings show that close to one in 10 Irish people aged between 18 and 29 believe the Holocaust is a “myth”.
A further 19 per cent of people in that age group believe the Holocaust happened but that the extent of it has been “greatly exaggerated”, reports Breaking News.
The survey also found that half of Ireland’s adult population does not know that six million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust.
More than a quarter of those aged between 18 and 29 who took part believed fewer than two million people were killed, while half said they had come across Holocaust denial or distortion online, reports Breaking News.
The Irish Times reported that the survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 per cent, meaning a result of 50 per cent could reasonably fall between 46.9 per cent and 53.1 per cent.
Across all adults surveyed, 8 per cent said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, while 18 per cent said they thought the number of people killed had been greatly exaggerated, reports Breaking News.
The survey also found that 12 per cent of all respondents said they had never heard of the Holocaust or were unsure if they had, rising to 15 per cent among those in the younger age group.
