Nearly 500,000 Oregon residents have been forced to flee their homes as wildfires rage across the western United States.

According to the BBC, there are currently 100 wildfires scorching 12 states, caused mainly by unusually hot, dry winds and in one case suspected arson. Oregon’s Governor said the death toll is yet to be measured, but confirmed four fatalities so far. These include a 12 year old boy and his grandmother in the town of Lyons.

In Butte county, northern California ten people have been confirmed dead in the blazing fires while another 16 are still unaccounted for. Meanwhile in Okanogan, Washington, a particularly tragic case saw a one year old boy die with his parents critically hospitalised.
