Almost half of Irish adults say that they worry about catching the flu, survey claims

New study from a drugstore chain shows that one in three Irish adults (37%) are concerned about getting the common cold and nearly half (47%) are concerned about getting the flu this winter, reports Breaking News.

Sixty-six percent of individuals are going to receive the flu shot this winter, according to the 1,000-person study.

According to statistics from the 2023–24 season, as reported by Lloyds Pharmacy, vaccination rates for at-risk groups clearly peaked in October at 53.4% and then began to fall.

More than 7,000 patients needed hospital treatment for Covid-19 last winter, while almost 4,000 patients were admitted with the flu, reports Breaking News.

According to Lloyds, these figures demonstrate the severe effects that flu may have, especially on the most susceptible sections of the population, such as those over 60, expectant mothers, and people with underlying medical disorders like diabetes or chronic lung disease.

Many Irish individuals prioritise preventative care, as seen by the poll, which found that 77% of respondents took supplements on a regular basis or more frequently throughout the winter, reports Breaking News.

The commencement of the drugstore chain’s winter vaccine campaign corresponds with the announcement of the survey findings.

According to the poll, 24% of persons over the age of 55 do not intend to have the flu shot.

Superintendent pharmacist Denis O’Driscoll said: “We’re seeing a steady stream of bookings particularly for the flu and Covid-19 vaccines together. You can now book to get both your flu vaccination and Covid-19 booster at the same time,” reports Breaking News.

“Flu vaccinations are crucial in helping the immune system develop antibodies to fight infection, offering protection against the most prevalent strains each season. For parents of young children, the nasal spray flu vaccine not only shields kids from potential complications but also helps protect the wider community. We all have a role to play in safeguarding each other this flu season,” reports Breaking News.
