Amazon Fire TV Stick warning to users as Netflix to be cut off for certain devices

If you enjoy binge-watching on Netflix and are using an older Fire TV Stick, you might want to take note, reports Dublin Live

Last month saw speculation that certain Fire TV models could soon lose access to Netflix — and now it’s confirmed: the restriction starts on June 3. “Netflix will be discontinuing support for some first-generation Fire TV devices, which were introduced more than 10 years ago,” Amazon stated.

This update will affect users who own the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014), or the Amazon Fire TV (2014). If you rely on these for streaming titles such as Drive to Survive, Adolescence, or Bad Thoughts, it’s time to consider upgrading, reports Dublin Live

While the full explanation for the removal isn’t crystal clear, The Mirror reports it may be tied to the AV1 codec technology.

AV1 enables streaming services like Netflix to deliver improved video quality — often tied to premium plans — but the older Fire TV devices don’t support this codec, reports Dublin Live

Understandably, Netflix likely wants to avoid charging users for features they can’t benefit from, which could explain why the app is no longer supported on these aging devices.

If you’re using any of the following models, Netflix access will be cut off this week:

• Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014).
• Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014).
• Amazon Fire TV (2014).

“Netflix remains available on all other Fire TV devices,” Amazon added, reports Dublin Live

Fortunately, there are several newer Fire Stick options on the market, including 4K models and the premium Max version with the innovative Ambient Experience. This feature transforms TVs into dynamic art displays and allows users to pin widgets and notes right onto the screen, reports Dublin Live
