Ambulances are being diverted from Drogheda hospital to relieve massive pressure on emergency department

Attempts were made to alleviate the strain on emergency department services on Sunday afternoon by redirecting ambulances from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, reports Breaking News.

Senior management put the ambulance bypass into place for three hours as the hospital handled a large volume of admissions and presentations.

There were no beds available at the emergency room, and at one point early on Monday, ambulances were waiting more than three hundred minutes with patients outside, reports Breaking News.

They stated that ambulances were rerouted to nearby hospitals in Dublin, Meath, and Cavan, and the bypass was installed at around 3 p.m.

In addition to confirming the temporary relocation, the HSE stated that visitation limitations were being put in place for the goal of preventing and controlling infections, reports Breaking News.

One person at a time is permitted with a patient, and minors are temporarily prohibited from visiting unless there are special reasons. Visitors are warned to avoid the area if they exhibit any symptoms.

It said: “The HSE has advised that the emergency department in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital remains very busy with a high number of presentations and admissions. It is expected that the pressure will continue over the coming days and we would urge the public to use alternative healthcare services for treatment such as GP, GP out of hours, Dundalk Injury Unit and pharmacies when appropriate. But if patients are very sick and in an emergency situation they should of course come to the emergency department. Emergency departments are always available to treat seriously ill patients and the sickest patients are seen first. People with less severe injuries and symptoms may have to wait to be seen,” reports Breaking News.
