American Arctic blast death toll rises to 15 in one of ‘biggest weather bombs’ of century




According to officials in several states, at least 15 people have died in the US during the recent bout of bitterly cold weather, reports The Mirror.

An Arctic air mass has swept south and eastward across the country, leading to a windchill warning or advisory for dangerous cold and wind for around 150 million Americans.

Meteorologist Zack Taylor from the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland stated that temperatures as low as -6.7C were recorded in northern and northeast Montana on Sunday morning.

The sub-zero lows have extended as far south as Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and parts of Indiana, reports The Mirror.

The Arctic blast is expected to impact 79% of the US geographically, from Oregon to Mississippi and Florida, by the end of the week.

A backcountry skier lost their life in Wyoming’s mountain range after triggering a 50ft-wide avalanche.

The victim was carried away into a gully and through brush and trees.

They were then buried for around fifteen minutes before being found by a companion in the mountains situated south of Alpine, Wyoming on Sunday afternoon. The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Centre has reported the incident, reports The Mirror.
