The planned urban beach project for Dun Laoghaire in South Dublin has received the green light.
The new facility, which is modelled on Berlin’s Badeschiff project, will include other amenities like a cafe and artificial beach at the East Pier, alongside a floating river barge containing a swimming pool with heated, treated seawater. It is expected to draw over 100,000 visitors.
Gerry Dunne, CEO of the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, has said that “An urban beach is a combination of a swimming pool and a facility for rest an relaxation to include things like deck chairs, artificial beach, changing rooms, beach bar, and so forth. We can proceed now to put this facility – it’s a public amenity, effectively – into place for somewhere up to, hopefully, 2016.”
