Irish Water is “all over the place” in relation to security deposit’s advice, according to landlords

Another day, another horror story involving Irish Water.

The issue of the relationship between tenants, landlords, and Irish water is still kicking about.

Today, the representative head of a landlords group, Fintan McNamara, has referred to Irish Water as being “all over the place” when it comes to their advice on tenants’ deposits. According to him, landlords are told different things, depending on the member of Irish Water staff they get on the phone.

The Coalition Government announced last week a proposal to introduce new laws forcing landlords to withhold deposits from tenants until proof of payment of their water bill is produced.

Landlords said that such move would be “outrageous”, and claimed they were being used as debt collectors for Irish Water.

According to Mr. Mcnamara, some of the landlords have been in touch with the Irish Water call center and they’ve been told that either ‘you won’t have to worry, the deposit won’t come into play at all’ or else they’re being told ‘no, it will’, depending who they get on the line.
