An estimated 1.7m marched along the streets of Hong Kong today, in the 11th consecutive weekend of demonstrations.
Protesters braved unfavorable weather conditions and defied a government ban to make their voices heard.
The protests were sparked by a proposed bill to facilitate the extradition of people between Hong Kong and territories with which it currently has no extradition agreements, including China. The now-defunct bill would have meant that Hong Kong would effectively be under jurisdiction from mainland China, a fact which would greatly diminish Hong Kong’s autonomy and civil rights.
