An Post have come in for strong criticism in recent days after the post service released a new stamp dedicated to the memory of former Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara.

The new €1 stamp which was released last Friday has sparked controversy online and indeed amongst some Cuban nationals as many have said it’s release was highly insensitive.

Many feel An Post’s decision to release the stamp to mark the 50th anniversary of the revolutionary’s death is inappropriate given the general consensus amongst his critics that he was mass murderer.

Those who voiced their disapproval also said An Post should consider publishing stamps that honour those who made significant changes in the world rather than someone who is remembered for their horrific actions.

However in defence of the stamp The Department of Communications said that the inclusion of Guevara on the stamp marks a significant moment in history and the decision to issue the stamp was officially approved back in 2015.
