People who are not yet vaccinated against the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic should be aware of their responsibility to the rest of society to protect others, Chancellor Angela Merkel said in Germany.

Speaking at New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s invitation to an Asia-Pacific economic summit, Merkel said politicians must advocate for serious interventions through honesty with the public.

Coronavirus cases have risen in Europe in recent weeks, and experts fear that health systems will once again be overwhelmed, blaming in part because unvaccinated people still transmit the disease to older and more vulnerable people.

“We have to make it clear that I have the right to get vaccinated, and that is a great fortune, a huge achievement of science and technology,” Merkel said over a video link. “But I also have a certain obligation to contribute to protecting society.”, DW reports.

Many people say that they’ll never get vaccinated regardless of consequences due to many reasons, some of which personal, religious and medical.
