Anonymous, untraceable “non crime” hate incidents and “Hate Crime” reporting service launched by Gardai

The Gardai launched a new anonymous, untraceable “non crime” hate incidents and “Hate Crime” reporting service.

According to the official Garda website a hate crime is “any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person to, in whole or in part, be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on actual or perceived age, disability, race, colour, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender”

The Garda site also defines “hate incidents (non Crime)” as “any non-crime incident which is perceived by any person to, in whole or in part, be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on actual or perceived age, disability, race, colour, nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender”.

The definition of “perceived” as outlined in Vocabulary.com is “If you sense something is true by instinct, but not necessarily by fact, you can describe that sense as perceived”.

You can submit your hate crimes and non-crime hate incidents directly with the Gardai here https://www.garda.ie/en/reportahatecrime/

No email address, phone number, or postal address is required to post your perceived hate crime or perceived non crime hate incidents. The Gardai website states “If you do not wish to provide your personal details, we will still record and endeavour to investigate this crime/incident”.

This anonymity and lack of traceability has the potential of wasting Garda resources and false reporting.
