Tech giant Apple has temporarily suspended access to its voice assistant Siri after grave concerns about privacy were raised.
The move follows claims by a contractor, who allegedly said he and other members of his team ‘regularly’ listened to people’s conversations, including intimate interactions as part of a ‘quality control’ program sponsored by Apple.
Siri is meant to start recording only after hearing the key phrase ‘Hey Siri’, but there have been reports that Siri’s recording function is sometimes triggered by misheard words, or even noises like a zip closing or opening.
Apple is the only tech company that does not offer an ‘opt-out’ clause for its voice-assistant ‘quality control’ program.
