Armies of flesh-eating silverfish insects are poised to invade thousands of Irish homes over the coming days, according to pest-control firms.

Cold weather prompts the species to seek shelter inside warm homes, where they in damp and dark crevices and feed on human skin and hair. Entire colonies can usually be found in bathrooms, attics, and basements.

One single specimen can lay up to 60 eggs a day.
