The number of homeless persons in emergency accommodations increased last month by 14,486 according to statistics, reports RTE.
The Department of Housing’s statistics indicates that 4,419 children and 10,067 adults are included.
There are now 57 more individuals in emergency accommodations than there were in July (14,529).
The number of young people in emergency accommodation who are between the ages of 18 and 24 increased by 2.5% in the previous month. It is now 1,740, reports RTE.
According to a statement from Dublin Simon Community, there are 10,481 individuals in emergency housing in Dublin, a 13% rise from the previous year.
“Despite a slight decrease in Dublin over the last month, these figures over the last number of years, show no sign of slowing down, and with winter approaching, things will only get worse. The truth is that people experiencing homelessness don’t have a line of sight towards a home. If we don’t see real investment in preventative measures, increased funding for homeless services, and clear directives to prioritise social housing for the long-term vulnerable, this crisis will continue to spiral,” said Catherine Kenny, CEO of Dublin Simon Community, reports RTE.
Last month, 58 individuals departed from Direct Provision, often referred to as International Protection Accommodation Services, and found themselves in Emergency Accommodation in Dublin.
The number decreased from 67 in July, according per data released by the Dublin Homeless Regional Executive.
45 persons were placed in emergency housing via Direct Provision in June, reports RTE.
Focus Ireland, a homeless organisation, has demanded that the government move quickly to provide social homes.
“We are urging the Government to adopt a policy that allocates a portion of new social housing specifically for families who have been homeless for an extended period of time,” stated Pat Dennigan, CEO of the charity. This targeted approach was instrumental in significantly reducing homelessness during the pandemic and has been crucial in Focus Ireland’s recent success in doubling the number of families we supported out of homelessness this year,” reports RTE.
