According to French authorities, a number of people—including a little child—died last night while trying to cross the Channel, reports RTE.

The provincial prefecture released a statement saying, “Several migrants have lost their lives trying to reach Great Britain by sea across the English Channel.”

There was a rescue operation this morning.

With this most recent tragedy, at least 47 would-be asylum seekers have perished this year while trying to enter England from France, reports RTE.

The governments of France and Britain have been working for years to halt the influx of unauthorised migrants, who are willing to pay smugglers hundreds of euros per person to travel from France to England in tiny boats.

Citing safety concerns, French officials try to prevent individuals from entering the water but do not get involved once they are afloat unless in cases of rescue.

Michel Barnier, the prime minister of France, stated on Tuesday that the nation requires a more stringent immigration law, reports RTE.

Asserting that people traffickers “exploit misery and despair” and pushing illegal asylum seekers to cross the Mediterranean and the Channel, he pledged to be “ruthless” against them.

The most recent event happened when eight migrants lost their lives in mid-September when their overloaded boat sank while they were attempting to cross the Channel.

Early in September, a laden boat sank off the northern French coast, killing at least 12 persons, including six kids, most of whom were from Eritrea, reports RTE.
