As we import the world, the number of people homeless Irish children climbs again in March

Over the previous month, there has been a modest increase in the number of persons using emergency housing, reports RTE.

According to the Department of Housing’s most recent figures, during the final week of March, 13,866 persons were in emergency housing; 4,147 of them were children and 9,719 of them were adults.

When compared to the previous month, when 13,841 people were homeless, the March statistics show an increase of 25 persons overall, reports RTE.

According to data provided by Simon Communities of Ireland, 1,878 more persons (16%) were placed in emergency housing in the 12 months after March 2023.

There were 4,147 children, a 19% (675) rise in the year, and 1,981 homeless households, a 21% (342) increase in the year.

Wayne Stanley, Executive Director of the Simon Communities of Ireland, said: “The figures released by the department today reveals a 16% year-on-year increase of men, women and children living in homelessness. While we welcome the fact that some regions have shown a small decline this month, we must reflect on the fact that it is almost ten years since these figures began to be published and homelessness was declared a crisis,” reports RTE.
