Driving test wait times are ‘well ahead’ of mid-August target, says RSA

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has reported “significant” progress in bringing down the national waiting times for driving tests, reports Breaking News.

According to the RSA, it has already exceeded its mid-August goal and is steadily approaching its Service Level Agreement (SLA) target.

As of August 14th, 2025, the average wait for a driving test invitation has reduced to 13.5 weeks—something the RSA called “well ahead” of its interim target of 16 weeks, reports Breaking News.

Two weeks earlier, the national wait time stood at 14.1 weeks. At its peak in late April, candidates were waiting as long as 27 weeks.

The RSA attributed the improvement to its Driving Test Action Plan, which was introduced in May following what it called “an unprecedented surge in demand,” reports Breaking News.

This plan aims to reduce the national average waiting time to 10 weeks—the SLA target—by September.

Steps taken under the plan include hiring more testers, improved scheduling to maximise appointment availability, and expanding testing infrastructure across the country, reports Breaking News.

Brendan Walsh, the RSA’s chief operating officer, said the improvement clearly shows that the plan is producing results.

“We’ve made significant strides in just a few months, thanks to the dedication of our staff and the support of the Department of Transport,” he said, reports Breaking News.

The RSA also reminded applicants that cancelling ahead of time if they can’t attend allows others to get tested sooner.

Candidates are advised to read all relevant study materials, ensure they go to the correct test centre, be fully prepared, and arrive in advance to give themselves the best shot at passing, reports Breaking News.
