Asylum seekers going to Ireland shows Rwanda plan’s deterrent effect is working very well, says Sunak

Claims that the UK government’s Rwanda plan is driving a wave of refugees into Ireland, according to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, demonstrate that the policy’s deterrent impact is effective, reports Breaking News.

“The deterrent is … already having an impact because people are worried about coming here,” Mr Sunak said, reports Breaking News.

It follows Tánaiste Micheál Martin’s claim that asylum seekers are being driven from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland by UK policy out of fear of being deported to Rwanda.

In an attempt to discourage others from travelling over the Channel in tiny boats, UK policymakers intend to send asylum seekers arriving in the UK on a one-way trip to the east African country.

The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act, the legislation that underpins the contentious policy, successfully navigated the UK parliament this week and was ratified on Thursday, reports Breaking News.
