A gunman went on the rampage on Saturday evening at the Cielo Vista Mall, in El Paso, Texas where there were between 1,000 and 3,000 shoppers in the centre at the time.
At least 15 people have been killed after the gunman, armed with a number of automatic weapons, opened fire on random people as they were making their way around the Walmart centre.
The perpetrator began the shooting at the store’s car park, then moved into the store.
Police say that a man in his 20s had been detained and that law enforcement did not fire a single shot at him before he was apprehended.
Doctors said they were treating 22 victims. Another patient died after arriving at one of the hospitals.
