At least 3,600 people appointed to public jobs in Ireland in recent years never even showed up to start

Since 2022, at least 3,600 applicants for public sector positions have failed to appear for their start dates, reports Breaking News.

According to the Public Jobs Service, around 1,200 applicants annually passed the civil service hiring procedure but chose not to accept the position.

The most positions were for “temporary clerical officers,” where 2,168 applicants were hired but never showed up, reports Breaking News.

More senior positions were also dropped, with about 20 medical consultants hired annually choosing not to accept a position.

60 individual applicants for senior medical positions have not shown up for work, according to the Public Jobs Service. This is an area where hiring has been extremely difficult, particularly for certain specialisations, reports Breaking News.

According to the Appointments Service, data was not gathered on every instance in which an individual chose not to accept a position in the public sector and that individuals were not required to provide an explanation for their decision.

According to the statement, there may also be instances in which they were not informed by a government agency or other public entity of a candidate’s failure to report for duty, as well as instances in which direct appointments were made without consulting them.

“The figures should be taken as indicative … rather than definitive,” they added, reports Breaking News.

Ninety-two individuals who were given administrative officer positions in the fields of business, energy, human resources, and health did not accept them.

Twenty more people were given well-paying jobs at the assistant principle level, but they chose not to accept them.
According to the statistics, 317 persons were hired as executive officers between 2022 and 2024 but chose to pursue other endeavours.

Additionally, sixteen individuals who were appointed as senior executive officials failed to show up for their positions, reports Breaking News.

Nine individuals were identified as not appearing for duty despite being given positions as principle officers, which had a beginning pay of nearly €100,000.

According to the appointments service, 84 more individuals who were assigned temporary clerical roles related to Ireland’s response to the refugee situation in Ukraine never started working, reports Breaking News.

More than 85% of the individuals allocated to more than 30,000 positions during the last three years have taken up their positions, according to a statement from public jobs.

A spokesman said: “Based on information we receive from our client departments and organisations; we are aware that approximately 10 to 15 percent of candidates do not take up positions after assignment,” reports Breaking News.
