Although it has not yet disclosed how ages will be confirmed, the Australian government has pledged to pass legislation this year enforcing a minimum age for minors to access social media, reports Breaking News.
According to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the government will test age verification technologies shortly in an effort to prevent minors from creating social media profiles.
The age range in which the line will be drawn is 14 to 16.
Lawmakers in a number of nations and US states are working to shield kids from the negative effects of the internet, such as bullying, reports Breaking News.
The Australian proposal coincides with a growing number of parents requesting that their children be safeguarded online, and an opposition party that has threatened to ban children under 16 from social media if it wins the May 2019 elections.
Mr Albanese told the Australian Broadcasting Corp: “We’ve committed to introducing legislation before the end of this year for age verification to make sure that we get young people away from this social harm. This is a scourge. We know that there is mental health consequences for what many of the young people have had to deal with – the bullying that can occur online, the access to material which causes social harm – and parents are wanting a response,” reports Breaking News.
