Four police officers have been killed after a truck slammed at full speed into two cruisers parked on the hard shoulder of a motorway.
The carnage occurred on the Eastern Freeway in the Melbourne suburb of Kew this afternoon, local time.
It is understood that the officers had pulled another vehicle over shortly before the truck crashed into all three cars. The driver of the car that had been stopped managed to jump out of the way and fled the scene on foot. Police are currently looking for him.
It is not immediately clear why the truck crashed onto the stationary vehicles. The truck driver was pulled out of the wreckage alive by passing motorists.
